Antique Stained Glass Windows and Antique Quilts - An Engineer Reveals Why You Need Both

You might think antique quilts and antique stained glass windows don't have much to do with each other -- and in most average homes they don't. Maybe that's why they're average.

Stained Glass Window Decals

If you want to have a home that's beautiful, unique and for sure not average, consider making use of the combination of an antique stained glass window and an antique quilt. You can use one or more of each in the same room. This opens up a world of decorating ideas.

Stained Glass Window Decals

The good news is that you can find antique quilts that will match any antique stained glass window -- and vice versa.

The colors you can match with these two items will amaze you. There's no decorating technique that gives you more freedom and options to accent any room and bring it to life.

As an engineer I can tell you that not only can you match the colors, but you can match the basic patterns - triangles, squares, circles, etc. When you can take it one step further and match the basic pattern, you will really have a room decorated fit for the cover of a decorating magazine.

If you don't want to go to the expense and trouble of changing a window, you can get the same basic results by hanging an antique stained glass widow on the wall.

One of the best things about this decorating technique is that you can easily and quickly move design from one room to another -- that is if you are hanging the antique stained glass window on the wall instead of installing it as a real window.

Take this idea and run with it and you will be amazed at how you can wow your friends and neighbors.

If you want to do all of this on a shoestring budget, you can find great bargains and almost unlimited selection of antique quilts and antique stained glass windows on eBay.

When creating a stain glass window the design may begin as a drawing, a painting, a photograph or any other kind of graphic artwork. The design needs to be simple and bold. Once you are happy with the design you can start work on the stain glass window. Nothing is better or creates character like a stained glass window, it is elegant and it adds sophistication to your home, the light that is produced is soft and is diffused into your home and creates a soothing atmosphere.

Stained Glass Window Decals

It's a good idea to make two copies of the pattern so that you can use one copy to cut the templates and the other copy to place on the work piece to see how it fits. You can cut some costs if someone can donate their old cutters to you, but even if you need to go out and purchase some stained glass cutters they are usually a pretty reasonable price.

Stained Glass Window Decals

Creating stain glass there are many techniques that can be used. When creating the classic stained glass window, there are many pieces of color glasses, you will need to cut each piece so they fit together, then you will need to take lead, brass or copper and use it as a buffer between the glass.

Rub the lead lines and get them well coated with the chemical on the cotton. Take an old rag and polish the lead lines very vigorously. To create an illusion of a lead line you need to do it on both sides of the glass.

Sometimes, a piece of stained glass will lose its original brightness and color that the lead lines once had. The blackness or copper of the patina will dull and you find that over time there will be a buildup of some type of corrosion and it usually appears around the edges of the lead. Most manufactures use lead as the bonding material because it is flexible to use and it last for a very long time.

Lead is used and stripped into predetermined shapes so that they can be fitted between then the pieces of glass.

As you get some experience under your belt you can acquire more tools and accessories as deemed necessary by you- the master craftsman. If you do your homework earlier on before diving in with both feet, you will find that some of the tools you use will continue to be used by you for many, many years to come. These tools help assist an individual in marking, cutting, smoothing, and soldering the glass. To make stained glass, you will first need to get the tools and materials ready.

Some people use stain glass making as a hobby and other times the hobby becomes a business. Stain glass windows are becoming very popular again and many people want these colorful windows in their home to brighten and bring good cheer. Many people bring the stain glass windows into their homes by purchasing lamp shades that are stained glass. One of the most popular stained glass lamps is tiffany.

    Stained Glass: Some Essential Terms

For those who are new to stained glass, it can seem as though this remarkable art form has a language all its own. Whether people want to start producing stained glass pictures on their own or are interested in finding beautiful stained glass images for a home or church, it is a good idea to be familiar with some of the more common terminology. This knowledge will help buyers better communicate what they are looking for and make it easier for novice artisans to get exactly what they need to create pictures. Some important terms are:

    Stained Glass Window Decals

Stained glass: Once used to describe any piece of art executed using colored flat glass, the meaning of the term has become much broader over the years. It is now used to describe the craft of joining glass pieces together to create a work of art, architectural elements and art made with colored glass, and individual pieces and sheets of colored flat glass. Lead came: Lead came is one material that can be used to join pieces of colored glass to create pictures. Large windows seen in churches are typically fashioned using this technique. The lead came is stretched and cut into appropriately-sized strips. There are grooves in the lead came into which the individual pieces are inserted. Finally, the joints are soldered together. Copper foil: This is the method used to create the now universally recognizable Tiffany-style stained glass. The edges of each individual piece are wrapped in copper foil. The side of the copper foil that is applied to the glass has an adhesive to allow for easy application. Flux is applied to the foil, and all of the edges are soldered together. The copper foil technique can be used to produce three-dimensional images, while the lead came technique is only useful for creating two-dimensional works and windows. Solder: An alloy that commonly contains lead and/or tin. It is melted with a soldering iron and used to join individual pieces together when a work of art is being assembled. Patina: This is a product that is brushed onto the lines made using the copper foil or lead came method. It can protect materials, replicate the look of lead, or simply restore the beauty of aging surfaces. Translucent: Translucent materials allow some light to pass through, but objects on the other side are not visible. Stained glass is considered a translucent material, and it is this property that gives the colored glass its characteristic warm glow.

    Stained Glass Window Decals

The information above represents just a few of the more common stained glass terms. When individuals are shopping around for or learning how to produce pieces, it may be necessary to do some independent research. Fortunately, information is readily available both in books and online.

    Stained Glass Window Ideas

Stained glass windows have no doubt stood the test of time and for obvious reasons. They have an unparalleled way of illuminating light and creating an eye catching beauty in their surroundings. Although they are widely known and adored in places of worship, they have also become a unique treasure to many homeowners. Let's explore a few of the ways they can be used to enhance the beauty of your home.

    Stained Glass Window Decals

Stained glass transom windows can be added to a front entrance and have a distinct way of welcoming your guests. These windows are timeless and will bring warmth and charm to your house throughout the year. They can be placed above or on either side of your door and come in many different complementary styles and sizes. Every home has its own personality and including a colorful transom to your front entryway will surely make it one of a kind.

    Stained Glass Window Decals

Stained glass is also a creative way of bringing art into your bathroom spaces. Placing a window in your shower or over your bathtub creates a relaxing ambiance as well as maintains privacy. Privacy is one thing people do not usually think about when they are considering stained glass, but it is a valuable aspect, especially in a bathroom setting. Wouldn't it be great to let the sunlight shine in without having to be covered by drapes or mini blinds?

The kitchen is always a room that eagerly welcomes sunlight and color. Most homeowners love bright, colorful kitchens and including a stained glass window is clearly a way to enhance that. These windows can be added as cabinet doors to replace plain glass or wood faced cabinet fronts. They can be used as a skylight or they can easily hang in front of a window.

Placing a stained glass window in a child's bedroom is a fun way to encourage playful imagination. There are many windows that are wrapped around nature scenes or animals that would be perfect to include in a theme room for your child. As their imagination is kindled by the bright colors and reflective light given by the window, many wonderful memories will be made.

Due to the vast selection of these windows including victorian, floral, and nature scenes to name a few, it should not be too difficult to find one to fit well with your setting. Whatever room you decide to decorate with a stained glass window, you can be sure the beauty of this art will last a lifetime. The light they reflect and the colors they radiate will no doubt bring something special to your home and your heart.

What is "Mission Style" Stained Glass?

Mission style stained glass, also known as "Frank Lloyd Wright", "Arts & Crafts", "Craftsman", "Prairie" or "Southwestern" stained glass is characterized by straight lines forming squares and rectangles. Mission style lamps come with straight-edged shades and oak or metal casting bases.

    Stained Glass Window Decals

Mission style refers to a style of stained glass with a pronounced geometry in design. Not all Mission design fits the classic mold and the differences between Mission, Craftsman, and Arts & Crafts lighting styles are subjective. Yet, to the detailed eye, the style differences are obvious.

    Stained Glass Window Decals

What we call Transitional Mission lamps rests comfortably in the gray areas. Transitional Mission is lighter and more feminine than its related styles, combining a square look with softer curves and profiles drawn from Classical and Colonial sources, making it especially suitable for rooms that benefit from a less formal approach.

While debate continues about the true origin of the term "Mission," it is usually seen evolving from English Arts & Crafts roots and intimately related to the American Craftsman movement. Mission is less a philosophy than a look - which can be summed up, and oversimplified, as square and rustic. Being eclectic, the style remains distinctive and popular to this day.

    Mission Style versus Tiffany Style

Mission style stained glass tends to be very different from Tiffany style stained glass. One of the biggest differences is the color. Mission style is very subtle; it takes a lot of its inspiration from the earth, specifically the desert. The colors of the stained glass are usually brown, gold, and amber. Occasionally you might also find green, red, or rich orange. It is meant to go perfectly with simple dark wood furniture and earthy tones. In home design and furnishings, it emphasizes natural materials, especially wood.

The revival in popularity of Mission styles stems largely from their association with handcrafted elements, a rarity in this technologically advanced age. These pieces offer an heirloom quality and a patina that deepens with age.

Mission and Arts & Crafts style furnishings and interiors are typically very durable and classic with a timeless appeal.

    Add to Your Decor

Adding Mission style stained glass, decor and accessories is a great way to improve the interior design of your home. You can combine Mission and Art Nouveau style items that add warmth with the interesting lines and feel of a Frank Lloyd Wright room.

Another use of Mission style is outdoor lighting fixtures that usually have the look and feel of carriage lamps. They are perfect for garages, entryways and patios.

Experiencing a resurgence of popularity of stained glass lamps in the late 20th century and into the 21st, the Mission-style continues to gain admirers. Emerging from the Arts & Crafts movement in the 1860s, it was a protest against the mass-produced ornate decor of the Victorian Era.

Stained Glass Patterns: Style Options for Interior Spaces

Whether an existing space is being improved or an entirely new one is being created, stained glass pictures are a way to add a warm glow and aesthetic appeal to a room, hallway, or entry area. Selecting the best images for a space can seem like a daunting process since there are so many possibilities. Many works, however, have similar looks and themes and therefore belong to the same category. Following are a few of the more popular types of stained glass images:

    Stained Glass Window Decals

Floral: Flowers are very common, traditional themes for stained glass images. The appearance of these works is as diverse as the beautiful and brightly-colored blooms found in nature. For instance, works may feature many small blooms joined by vines, a design that incorporates flowers and geometric shapes, a single sunflower, or a carefully arranged bouquet in a vase. Victorian: Works that fall under this category share a few characteristics. Many incorporate flowers into the design, and these types of stained glass images usually feature rich, vibrant colors such as green, red, and purple. The lines are curvy and smooth, and are often part of a complex geometric pattern. Finally, Victorian pictures frequently incorporate beveled glass. Abstract: The characteristics of this type of art are the same regardless of which materials are used to create it. The subjects of abstract art are not recognizable objects or people. Instead, the colors of the work and the material itself are the most important aspects. Cubism and impressionism are two well-known types of abstract art. Art deco: Art deco windows became popular during the first half of the 21st century. The defining characteristic of this style is the use of geometric shapes and bright colors. Talented artists can create almost any type of scene using glass circles, squares, triangles, and other forms, from seascapes to simple designs featuring repeating patterns. Modern/contemporary: This is the style that is perhaps most difficult to define. Artists can draw on any of the techniques or styles developed by past artists and use their own creativity when crafting decorative elements. Basically, modern works are designed to suit the space where they will be placed, and don't need to comply with a set of rigid rules regarding shapes, subjects, or colors.

Choosing the right type of pattern for a space is crucial, but it is only one part of the selection process. For stained glass pictures to have the desired impact, color scheme, room size, framing options, lighting, and the overall complexity of the design also need to be considered.

    Decorating With Stained Glass

Decorating with stained glass may at first seem to be a daunting task. It may be difficult just to find that perfect table lamp for your newly decorated living room. Once you see the beauty of stained glass, you will want to add stained glass to other rooms.

    Stained Glass Window Decals

You have to pick out light fixtures and portable lighting for the rest of your home to compliment your original piece. The choices of colors and styles are almost unlimited. Your choice depends on your likes, tastes, and uses. Of course, there are many lighting fixtures from lamps to sconces to pendants. There are also window hangings and fireplace screens.

    Stained Glass Window Decals

Tiffany style lamps are the most popular and least expensive way to add the beauty and atmosphere of stained glass to your home or office. These lamps endure for lifetimes and become family heirlooms.

Stained glass lamps are both beautiful and functional. These lamps can be purchased with table or floor length bases, which are usually made of sturdy metal such as brass or pewter so the lamp is not likely to tip over and break the shade.

Made of Favrile or iridescent glass, invented by Louis Comfort Tiffany in the late 19th Century, the iridescence causes the surface to shimmer, but causes some opacity. This iridescent effect of the glass is obtained by mixing different colors of glass together while hot. The sheets are hand cut to the desired shapes and sizes, the edges wrapped in thin copper and soldered together. Many bubbles and irregular surfaces make each piece unique.

This Is Why Decorating With Stained Glass Is So Awesome

A Tiffany style lights provides soft, diffused light that takes on the hues of each color used in a design. When turned on the colors are striking, and when turned off, the shade adds interest and color to the room.

Stained glass lighting accents complement any décor. A Tiffany pattern may have floral, geometric, whimsical or animal designs. You are no longer limited to Traditional choices. There are many different styles from which to choose. There is the Mission or Prairie style made famous by another 19th Century artist Frank Lloyd Wright. There is Victorian style. Today Rustic and Rustic Lodge are becoming very popular styles.

    Types of Stained Glass Fixtures

Tiffany style table, accent lamps or desk lamps can enhance an end table, your desk or nightstand. Used for reading or lighting a small area, these are the workhorses of home lighting. Tiffany floor lamps, floor lamp torchieres and bridge arm floor lamps are an interesting addition to any room. They add height, drama, and create an interesting focal point. They can be moved from place to place as ambient (background) lighting, or add task lighting as needed.

Decorating your kitchen with Tiffany Style Island ceiling fixtures or pendants will increase your available light. They will create a smashing colorful effect to your kitchen island.

Billiard table lights with a whimsical, sports, or outdoor theme add interest to any billiard or pool table.

Stained glass wall mounted sconces accent your fireplace or light and dramatize your hallway. Vanity as well as wall mounted sconces will provide excellent bathroom lighting.

Welcome your guests with a beautiful Tiffany or Lodge style chandelier in your entry foyer or hallway. Contemporary glass pendant lights add stunning beauty to your entry, dining room, kitchen, bath, or any room in your home. Some of these pendants are definitely not your grandmother's stained glass.

Points to Consider When Decorating with Stained Glass

    1. Think about the mood or ambiance you want to create. 2. Consider the decorative elements you want to accent. 3. Identify what activities will be done in each room (reading, hobby, home work, cooking, bathing, etc) 4. Dark colors need more light. So add brighter background light to darker areas. 5. Identify area of multiple uses, and use more than one type of lighting.

Although many people think of decorating only with lamps when referring to stained glass, there are many other interesting uses.

Of course, you can use stained glass window panels in your decorating scheme. These beautiful panels hang in a window. They add a smashing effect to any room. These panels can be used to hide a not so nice view, thus enhancing a room's atmosphere.

Several artists became famous for their stained glass creations. The two most famous are Louis Comfort Tiffany, whose creations are often inspired by nature. His dragonfly, peacock and cherry blossom motifs are still much sought after today. The other artist is Frank Lloyd Wright, who created in the Mission or Prairie style.

There are stained glass fireplace screens. With candles lit behind them, these screens add charm and warmth to any fireplace setting. These fireplace screens are meant for decorative purposes only as the heat from a fire could melt the solder.

Buy high quality stained glass from reputable manufacturers such as Meyda Tiffany or Dale Tiffany. The glass design and workmanship are among the best, and the bases and electrical components are of the highest quality for long life.

You walk in the front door excited to look at the place that you feel certain you will be calling home. You KNOW this is the ONE! When you open the door, the plain white walls and bare windows have just given you flash blindness and you have to take a few moments to remember where you are at and find your sunglasses. The landlord proceeds to discuss all of the great amenities including the new white paint, since they don't allow renters to paint the walls they went ahead and just painted them...because "everything goes with white." You walk to the living room window and wonder how you didn't notice the large public parking lot that is parked right outside. You think to yourself..."so much for my dream apartment!" You walk to see the master bedroom convincing yourself that you can still make this work until you see that the master bedroom and bathroom have great windows that offer a spectacular view into the apartment building next door which is approximately 18 inches away! The landlord proceeds to tell you that they don't allow tenants to put holes in the walls which not only squashes any hopes for putting some color on the walls but also kills any thoughts of mini blinds. At this point you figure although you will be saving money because of the great price, the neighborhood will be watching TV with you through the living room window, you will have to wear sunglasses all the time, and will have to find a large piece of furniture to cover up the windows in the bedroom because a curtain just won't get it done. So there you have it! For all of us who have rented before all hope is not lost.

    Stained Glass Window Decals
